 introduction summer work

The relationship between the dancers in the ‘fallin’ is quite good because the dance moves through all the dancers before the dance actually starts. They did this by standing in a line facing the back and the person at the start of the line starts the movement and then passes it on to the next person in the line and then touches them and the movement goes through each dancer then the dance actually starts. Also at the start of the dace the two people on the end of the line hold hands this is also reflected at the end where the same thing happens. In the ‘cry me a river’ dance there was also a lot of touching and the dancers moved in a cannon similar to the ‘fallin’ dance. Both dances were group dances with elements of solos in both of them.  The dynamic qualities were quite different in both dances for example in the ‘cry me a river’ dance the dynamics were smooth and graceful however the soloist in the middle’s dynamics were in some places forceful and explosive. Whereas in the ‘fallin’ dance most of the movements were quite sharp and strong with occasional breaks for more flowy movement. It was also quite jumpy. The ‘cry me a ricer’ dance was performed in a big open space in a warehouse kind of thing, it wasn’t very bright so didn’t have much lighting however the dancers really used the big space that they were given. They did this by running around in big circles before starting the dance and using the formation of a line both horizontally and vertical. The dance also travelled quite a lot as it moved across the floor. Whereas because the other dance took part on a street it could not travel as much and only moved in a little space. However was still a very creative and entertaining place to dance and to watch dance. They all wore grey costume which was effective as through the whole dance the movement was travelling through each one of them before the dance. They still worked as a group throughout it all as well. In my opinion they show the emotion pain through all the dance but using there facial expressions and also quick and sharp movements. I would say that the style of dance in the ‘fallin’ dance would be street contempary number. I think that the ‘cry me a river’ dance was really nice I like how they made the soloist stand out by him being a boy and being in a different costume to the girls I think the style of the dance was contempary. The dance at the bringing also had a lot of elevation and the lines were really good.

Martha graham dance company – diversion of angles

The dancers work in two different groups with a solo dancer in the middle. The dancers in the group stay in timing with each other and surround the centre dancers. When the music changes tempo the dancers often support this with their movement.

Doris Humphrey/water study/momentum dance co

The dancers work together to form different shapes to do with the water study. The movement was slow and scynronised. They used there breath to help make sound to perform to. The dancers are light of there feet and usually keep their head down. You can also see a lot of technique

Merce cunningham – pond way:

The dynamics in the dance varied between slow and sharp movements for example reaching to jumping. The dancers fed off each other’s movements to form relationships in the performance. There is usually always space between the dancers so the stage is most of the time filled up.

Limon dance company 2017:

In the dances I noticed that the dancer works in pairs, trios and as a group. Short bursts of movement were usually performed by one person as a solo coming out of the group while the others did slower movement in the group this created a contest of movement. I also noticed the technique as the dancers did lifts and also a story being told in the dances. The dancers were also very synchronised.
